OF PARTIES AND PANCAKES the good times continue at KISMET

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! THE ANNUAL KFDA PANCAKE BREAKFAST!!!

                                        Photos by Bradlee

At 8:30 AM the line was outside ready to come in and they came in a steady stream unlike the waves if the past (kids at dawn – grownups at the end under the wire) But just before the doors opened Joanie called the troops together to sing “Happy Birthday” to one of the newest KFDA members, Grace Wood who had just turned 20. It was an emotional moment.

Those of us who come for a good meal, pay a bargain price and schmooze, have no idea what goes into the preparation and planning. So here’s a glimpse of the “backstage” of the event from the stalwart organizer, Joan McKeehan who gathered her troops for an uncharacteristically emotional ”thank you”.

In her own words:
We had such a fabulous crew. Many new participants who learned the drill in a nano-second.

Set up on Saturday afternoon had so many helpers I cannot begin to name them all but I thank them with all my heart.

Early (6:30am) Sunday morning it was Chief Dominic, Joe McK and myself pulling the trucks out and setting up the truck bay room with tables while Tommy and Bobby got the kitchen going.

My Old Reliables in the kitchen:Tommy Field, Bobby Rush and Joe Mck on meats

Iron Women on Pancakes - Rose Liotta, Sharon Sitone, Dr. Linda

Strong Men on Pancakes - Joe Carlton (Karen Spollen's Joe), Dennis Someso

Food Servers - Fran Stobnitsky and Linda Barkan with Myrna filling in anywhere she was needed

Fruit and Pure Maple Syrup - Roz Sackoff

Milk, Juice, Water moniters - Linda Schumacher and friend Donna

At the Door - Alice Shultz and Gracie & Casey.

Lauren Dennis as ticket taker and explaining the set up to newcomer guests.

Breakdown and clean-up crew came out of the woodwork - men like Anthony DiBlasio, Arthur Goldstein, Dr Janet's son Jimmy (the groom to be) and so many I didn't even know.
It was a beautiful thing.

Unlike prior years it was a constant flow of people pretty much from the moment we opened up. Usually it comes in waves with lulls in between. The only bummer was that I'm pretty sure we fed 50-60 people that did not pay, but snuck in the back door unbeknownst to me.

Could you imagine people trying to scum the Fire Dept??? Next year it will be wristbands and crime scene tape across the truck bay doors. So sad that I'll have to do that. It's never happened before.
So all-in-all I think we had about 325 guests given to amount of food consumed.

Just like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Committee I started planning next year's breakfast the very next day.....................

OLD FASHIONED DISCO PARTY ROCKS KISMET

Birthday Gal Jeanine created a major event

The music did not float on air but infuse the atmosphere as Kismet (and some Salteens no doubt) was under the cammanding hands of NYC’s DJ Strip  delivering, as the flyer promised, a compelling compilation of classic 70’s & 70’s dance music  as Riz Biz hosted Motel O, BVT, Kismet Bliss,  7 Seas, 3 by C,  celebrating Jeanine B’s BD. Indeed like a musical Pied Piper  disco dancers of all eras flocked to the deck from nearby Relax+, C A ‘Ool, Dynasty’s Nick’nNic, the Lambie’s Carolyn St sparked it up with her flashing jewelry, Avalon’s Marilyn,  John Altieri was grooving it up as Chance, 7Sea’s, And even the ‘Du’s went out of area to come over - Sanctuary’s Sharon said “Its like WW II here, the ratio of 8 to 1 women to men- but thankfully Disco dancing does not require partners. Jeanine looked terriiiiiiiiific in a sexy striped number but the man of the hours was the DJ who drove the party till past midnite.

From Sharon’s Kitchen
RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
Kismet’s Kooking with Sweets
If you are like me, you are always looking for a new recipe. Something not too difficult and won’t keep you in the kitchen (and off the beach) for too long.
Spiced Black Beans
Serves 6
3 16oz cans black beans, 2 cans drained and rinsed, 1 can un-drained
4 slices bacon – (optional)
4 cloves garlic minced
½ onion chopped
1 stalk celery chopped
3 Jalapenos or Serrano peppers chopped ** Wear gloves and do not touch your eyes when working with these peppers**
1 bay leaf
½ tsp curry powder
½ cup fresh brewed coffee
Juice of ½ lime
2 tsp dark rum
Salt and pepper
Saute bacon until almost crispy, do not drain
*if you skip this step use a little olive oil to cook the vegetables.
Add vegetables, spices, garlic and bay leaf. Simmer until tender
Add beans, coffee, rum, lime juice
Simmer until hot
Add salt and pepper to taste
DRINK OF THE WEEK
Voodoo Rum Punch
This is party material. Makes approx. 25 8 oz drinks
92oz (2 cans), pineapple juice
32oz carton of Orange juice
1 liter of Barbados Rum or other dark rum
375ml (1/2 bottle) of Cruzan coconut rum, Malibu should work just as well
6 oz grenadine
32oz bottle of sprite. Use club soda of you prefer less sweet
6-8 dashes of Angostura bitters
8-10 slices of orange and lime
Mix all together, add fruit slices, serve with ice. Or place in punch bowl with ice block.
Bon Appetit!
